The Global Directory of Training Opportunities was developed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as an aggregator of programs available to ophthalmologists looking to supplement their education and experience in ophthalmology. The directory is open access to all programs and trainees. It supplies information about fellowships, externships, observerships, preceptorships, and research opportunities around the globe.
Background
For years, ophthalmologists from outside the United States have asked the American Academy of Ophthalmology for a pathway to seek additional training in the U.S. or other countries with high quality ophthalmology training programs. One of the key barriers in advising international trainees has been the lack of a central list of programs interested in working with international ophthalmologists. Many programs have been working with internationals for years, even decades, but most programs did not advertise this widely and knowledge of their willingness to work with internationals typically spread solely through word of mouth.
History
In September 2016, the Academy announced the launch of the Global Directory of Training Opportunities at https://www.aao.org/training-opportunities .
Growth
Within the first nine months of launch, the directory had over 500 entries. The listings have grown quickly in part because creating a listing takes only a few minutes. This is performed at https://www.aao.org/gdto-submission
Functionality
The site allows users to search for programs by region and by subspecialty or focus.
